2020: The Most Boring Year Ever?

It is now 2021. The year 2020 has passed by so quickly that I almost feel that I have wasted a year of my life. Nov-Dec 2020, however, was an extremely busy season for me and I finally have time to sit down at Laguna Golf National Dusit Thani, now that the hotel is operational. It’s surprisingly eerily quiet though.

Nothing much happened last year; I was supposed to go snowboarding in Karuizawa, hold our annual Black Alice tea party, produce our annual EOY J-Culture Festival, drive in remote lands with my cell group members, go surf, but none of these happened. I confirmed a few of my artistes for 2020, but they would be for another year. My list for 2021 seems big, but I cannot possibly bring everyone in it. This makes selection even more challenging.

I’m not even sure whether we will be able to travel or hold events in 2021. Wearing a mask, something so uncommon previously, is now a everyday sight.

During the COVID lockdown, I played old school Dota and Tower Defense with a number of my old friends. That was pure nostalgia. One of my favourite Beat-Them-Ups from Genesis, Streets of Rage also released a sequel on the Switch. I made an online mysterious friend that I still play together every night since lockdown days. I still don’t how who he is, how old he is or how he even looks like. It’s really amusing.

In 2020, we contemplated on changing our house, but decided not after doing the math. I almost changed to a Honda Fit for my wife, but thankfully the seller wasn’t keen and I didn’t insist on buying. We ended buying a CR-Z instead, for lesser and in much better condition. Wife seems much happier with a Honda than a Suzuki. The CR-Z was one of the other cars that I wish to own about 12 years ago and I didn’t expect to be presented the opportunity to eventually buy one.

I lost and made some money in paper assets, and decided that those are not for me. Financial instruments always say that 75% of people loose money using this tool. We all believe we are the 25%. I seem to have much better luck with cars and houses. So I guess I’ll stick to that.

On hindsight, this is perhaps the most boring year that I have ever lived in my life. With no traveling in sight for 2021, it does feel a little depressing. I love to experience different cultures in different lands.

Engineering work was really packed and busy in 4Q 2020, much more so than in 2019. I was busy with a mask making factory at Tuas, handing over Dusit Thani hotel, and now 70% through a chiller roof top replacement at ST Engineering. Next month, another factory is to be constructed at Tuas, and I’ll most probably be busy for another 1-2 months.

It’s a rather short post on 2020; nothing too emotional nor too deep to think about. I managed to spend more time with my family, my friends, still managed to keep fit, so I guess these are good things.

Life is really pretty short; it simply accelerates as you grow older. And because of that, I really want to make it count.
